Restylane
Up until the last several years, adults requesting a filler to eliminate
facial wrinkles or folds received animal-based "collagen injections."
Restylane has largely replaced collagen due to its longer lasting effect
and the absence of animal proteins thought responsible for allergic
reactions.
What is Restylane? Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic
filler that restores fullness and volume to the skin to correct moderate
to severe facial wrinkles and folds. The filler is made of hyaluronic
acid, a natural substance that already exists in humans and creates skin
fullness and smoothness. Restylane is most often used for treatment of
deep nasolabial folds (between the nose and the side of the lips), eye
hollows ("sunken eyes"), marionette lines (extending downward from the
sides of the lips), and vertical lip lines. For those seeking fuller lips,
Restylane lip augmentation is the procedure of choice.
What can I expect? The process starts with a consultation, which
is free of charge. Restylane is injected directly into the skin using an
ultrafine needle. The procedure is quick, lasting 10-15 minutes, and
results are practically instantaneous. Since the injection can be mildly
uncomfortable, the areas can be anaesthetized prior to treatment, much
like a dentist would do. After the treatment, you might have some redness
or swelling, which subsides within 4- 6 days. Sunbathing and cold outdoor
activities should be avoided until the redness or swelling subside. If
needed, oral pain medications can be prescribed following lip
augmentation.
How long will the results last? Restylane has been proven to
deliver long-lasting results, approximating 6 months. Many individuals,
however, note effects lasting months longer.
Why not use collagen or botox for facial wrinkles or folds?
Bovine collagen is derived from animals (cows); hence, allergy testing is
necessary prior to treatment. Furthermore, the effects of the animal-based
collagen are not as long-lasting as Restylane. For the most part,
Restylane has replaced collagen fillers. Botox is a drug that blocks nerve
transmission and relaxes the underlying muscles. Patients have been
pleased with this treatment for wrinkles. Choosing the correct treatment
modality for you is part of the consultation process.
